O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and bottom two, respectively. The judges were surprised by her performance and suggested viewers choose contestants who sang well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performances. The judge Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
